Protect 14th Amendment - Birthright of Citizens


Currently, many serious issues are going on in the U.S, and ending birthright citizenship, proposed by President Trump, is one of them. Our classmate, Luis Hurtado, preferes to protect our birthrights in his Blog Stage 5. I am not sure if he is an immigrant like me, but I agree with Luis to protect birthright for legal immigrants.

Luis opens his blog by stating that President Trump will defy the U.S Constitution, and this is really matter as a whole. Luis argues that Mr.Trump is trying to control immigrants from other country, but immigration can benefit our nation in many ways. Many of those immigrants will become leaders or contribute to prosperity of America in the future. Luis believes that we should protect our constitution and welcome immigrants. He expresses his thoughts and opinions to support his arguments throughout the blog. Luis is able to summary this topic in a brief paragraph. His blog is great and straightforward. In my perspective, I discourage ending birthright citizenship in the U.S. Honestly, I am not trying to protect my benefit as a legal immigrant, but I am thinking widely as a whole. If President Trump used his executive order to pass this rule, so he would break the 14th amendment of the Constitution, which says “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States…” I agree that the President of the United States has his strong power, but it should not go above the Constitution. In fact, it’s easy for him to change the Constitution by his executive power, but it is not that easy with all U.S citizens. I also agree with Luis that children are our bright future, and we should not take away their advantages. Everyone wants to come here because this is a country of powerful, development, freedom and opportunity. Immigrants will also bring diversity of cultures, minds and improvements to this nation.

Eventually, Luis and I strongly protect birthright citizen in the U.S. The United State is a one of the greatest country in the world, so we should not afraid of immigration. Many people  go through many obstacles to come here because they believe that the greatest country will make the greatest people. Immigrants are not bad at all, but they are new potential of the United State. In addition, the U.S is known as the country of freedom and justice, so we should be worthy of that name.

Again, we should not build the U.S-Mexico wall.


In the Blog Stage Five of the US Government course, there is the blog that discusses about the same topic as mine, which is really attracts me. The blog, written by Auburn Lucas, proposes that we should not build a wall between the U.S and Mexico. Lucas and I have a similar opposition over this problem because a border wall will waste billions of dollars, and it also lead to some serious national issues in the U.S.
I totally agree with Lucas that building a wall will add much more to our debt, and we will “be in deep trouble regarding our economy, foreign affairs, and the environment” (Lucas). He states three effective reasons to support his argument. First reason is very straightforward, and it is the main concern of the U.S: who will pay for the Trump-Mexico border wall? Everyone is questioning that who will pay for a wall since “President Trump is strongly advocating for lower taxes and the money for the wall is not coming from our taxes (Lucas).” Additionally, the U.S-Mexico border can impact negatively to internal and foreign affairs l of the U.S. The border wall can devastate wildlife and nature between the U.S and Mexico because it prevents animals from accessing foods, water, and mates. The U.S-Mexico border wall will also hurt the South Texas farmers as well, and the rivers between two countries might be cut off. Throughout the last two reasons, Lucas shows the damages of building a border wall since it probably hurts both both people and natural of the United States.
Lucas is successfully persuaded the reader why we should not build the US-Mexico border wall. His article is very thoughtful and fairly detail. He uses brief evidences to support his opinion throughout his blog. However, I would like to see more facts and reactions of people in the U.S over this issue.
In conclusion, I agree with Lucas in the issue that the U.S should not build a border wall with Mexico. The main purpose of Trump’s wall is to stop illegal immigrant, but no one can guarantee that the wall will stop illegal immigrants. So, why should not we build a stricter border security instead of wasting billions of dollars on it. That does not make sense at all. Thus, Lucas and I discourage the U.S and Mexico border wall.

We should not build a US-Mexico border wall

During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump proposed to build a border wall between the U.S and Mexico. But, we don't really need it. Why? There are many reasons for saying no.

First, President Trump wants to build a wall to prevent a mass of undocumented immigrants and illegal drugs from Mexico. Yet, Mexico population growth has decrease dramatically. Following to the World Bank, the fertility rates in Mexico have declined from about 6.7 million in 1960 to about 2.1 million in 2016. The lower fertility the lower migration in the future. Following the Forbes magazine, it is also an important sign that the economy of Mexico has increased, and education levels have risen. We also have a high security system at the border. Basically, it is unlikely that the U.S is going to meet the era of mass illegal migration in the future since Mexico is improving. Even we build the wall, no one knows if the flow of drugs will be able to stop. Generally, the wall is unnecessary.

Second, the cost of the border wall is not properly stated, but it should cost about $18 billion or more, according to the CNN. The Trump administration is at risk of wasting large amount of money to spend on the border wall. President Trump insisted Mexico to pay for the wall during his campaign. However, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has emphatically rejected to do so. Then, the U.S taxpayers probably probably have to involve into this payment. Building the U.S-Mexico might hurt national's finance and citizen's money.

Third, The U.S Mexico border wall will have a negative impact on wildlife and farmers. Following the Fox News, the border wall will damage wildlife because "physical barriers prevent or discourage animals from accessing food, water, mates, and other critical resources by disrupting annual or seasonal migration and dispersal routes."Additionally, the U.S-Mexico border wall will make life harder on some South Texas farmers.

Eventually, I think that the U.S should not build a border wall. We can not predict what will happen in the future. We can not be sure that building a wall will be able to stop completely undocumented immigrant and illegal drugs. But, we are pretty sure that it will cost the billions of dollars, and it will hurt wildfire, farmers around the border. Importantly, an unnecessary US-Mexico border wall probably needs our money also.
